Full Swing, QCLL style
This one tip we learned from our instructor Maddie MIGHT be just the thing to help you make your golf swing even better…
This past Friday night was our Full Swing Clinic & 4-hole scramble event at Meadow Links & Golf Academy in Winton Woods. The event sold out to capacity which was 20 women in total. Our instructors were Matt Starr, Maddie Nichelson, and Scott Nevius.
The format was awesome. We met on the patio behind the pro shop at 6PM. From there, we were paired up on golf carts. We drove our golf carts out to the Meadow Links practice facility. Then we split up into 2 groups - one group focused on irons with Maddie & Scott, while the other focused on woods with Matt, and after some time passed the groups were swapped. When the instruction portion concluded, we headed out to the executive course and played a 4-hole scramble. There was a special incentive in this game. Any team to get 100% greens in regulation (meaning hit the tee shot onto the green on a par 3, or hit the green in 2 shots on a par 4) got to deduct a point from their total score.
Maddie gives basic setup tips to the group working on irons. The instructors had these cool training aids made out of pool noodles and alignment tools to help illustrate the swing plane on which the club should travel - you can see the bright green training aids behind her to the left.
Getting right into it…
Have you ever wondered what to do with “the girls?” Should your arms go over or under your boobs?
Maddie did not waste any time addressing two big issues in a woman’s golf swing … “the girls.” She explained how to arrange your arms so that “they” don’t get in the way. This is something that I have heard many women say that their golf instructors do not know what to tell them or how to answer this question, understandably so since they pretty much do not have this issue to deal with.
I have always heard that you have to put both arms over your boobs, but Maddie showed us another option which is a one arm over and one arm under option.
If you are right handed, left arm is over the left boob and right arm is underneath the right boob. And obviously the opposite if you are left handed: your lead arm should be over the girls, and your lagging arm CAN be under if it’s comfortable.
What you don’t want is both arms under. That will prevent you from being able to swing through fully.
Maddie just came out for a little while with us since she recently had a baby and is getting ready to ease back into work. I was so happy she came out for this - she rocks!
Matt showed us how to swing our woods - driver, 3 wood, 5 wood, etc. His training aid was a spray painted clock on the grass - and the mental imagery of a clock face for us to focus on as we swing.
Notice the clock face spray painted onto the grass?
Powerful stuff…
It’s pretty powerful to see 20 women lined up on the grass tee practicing irons and woods. The instruction was phenomenal - they really took their time and made sure everyone got something out of the clinic portion.
In the last 4 years I have had several lessons with instructors. It can be tough to figure out how to make your body do what it needs to do for a powerful & efficient golf swing - but sometimes an instructor will say something that will help your mind enable your body to “feel it” and do it the way it is supposed to be done.
Training aids and using different analogies, imagery, visualizations can help so much! Like when Marianne told me to keep my weight on the inside of my right leg - breakthrough for me, helped me keep my balance so much better than anything I had been trying to “feel” before.
After the scramble it was time for the raffles and to announce the winners!
Drumroll please as we announce the winners:
Alexa won the PXG clutch.
Olivia won the Callaway polka dot golf tote.
Andrea won the 2 Champions Club Tickets to the Kroger Queen City LPGA Championship, happening September 18-22 at TPC River’s Bend in Maineville Ohio.
Everyone who attended the event received 2 free one day any day general admission to the championship.
One team hit all 4 greens in regulation and therefore got to deduct a shot from their total: Cassie, Sara, Brittany and Andrea won the scramble and received little QCLL gift bags.
Thanks to everyone who attended the event! Congrats to our winners!
Matt announces the scramble results using the official scorecard!
Me doing what I love to do: hand out gifts at the end of events!
