Twinning, winning, and improving
Me and Char on the first tee in our Cincinnati Reds gear
This week’s outfit theme for our golf league was Twinning. Char and I decided on Cincinnati Reds gear. There were a few cute color coordinating teams. Later this season there is a week with the theme of “favorite sports team” so… you might see Reds again, you might not… we’ll see.
Last week was the mid-season scramble. Our foursome came in at one over par. Turns out, that earned us 3rd place and some prize money! The prize for 3rd place is….(drumroll)… $8 each! And hey, eight dollars is eight dollars. I’ll take it! Felt good to win something. Team effort for sure - everyone contributed. So thrilling! Hah
Flower bed at the tee boxes on the 4th hole
The summer flowers at Hickory Woods are very pretty right now. These beautiful hibiscuses were in the middle of a really pretty flower bed with several different types of summer blooms. Love it. Love it. Love it.
Smiling because things are starting to come together in my golf game (slowly!).
As the golf season goes on, my game is improving a bit. I was super pumped that my score was 49. I had great drives, my putting was just OK (could have been better) but really striking my irons cleanly and consistently. My lesson with Marianne paid off - I focused on how to hit my irons when I’m on an incline.
My favorite hole at Hickory Woods is #6, a 99 yard par 3. (Do you have a favorite? or is it just me???) I think it’s my favorite because it’s the first one I really figured out how to par consistently. I have gotten a couple birdies on it too. Generally my strategy is to use my 8 iron and I hit the green. It’s an oblong green, slopes from left to right, and it’s narrow from front to back.

I think next time we play the front nine I’m going to use my 9 iron on #6. This round, while yes I hit the green using my 8 iron, the ball landed 10 yards past the pin, and then I had a steep downhill putt (and unfortunately 3 putted so got a bogie!).
It took me a while to get to know how far I hit each of my irons. At some point someone told me to figure out which one of my irons I hit 100 yards, and then assume roughly 10 yards +/- as you go up and down numbers. For example if my 8 iron is my 100 yard club, then my 7 iron would be my 110 yard club. Which club do you hit 100 yards? Tell me in the comments! Do you use this method?
Anyway my point is: I think my 9 iron is now my 100 yard club, and therefore my go-to club for hole #6. Why? I have been focusing on feeling weight in my inner right leg, which helps me maintain my balance and posture throughout my swing (worked on those things in my lesson with Marianne!). I think that has helped me so much. As we are really in mid-season now, I have a little more power in my swing, and am able to hit my clubs a little bit longer.
Prepping all the giveaways for Friday’s event!
This FRIDAY July 19 is our next event and I am getting SO EXCITED for it. Queen City Links Ladies is hosting a Full Swing Clinic & 4 hole scramble at Meadow Links & Golf Academy in Winton Woods. You can find the details here - as of Weds Jul 17, 6pm, there are 5 spots remaining.
I am prepping all of the giveaways. I will raffle off 2 Champions Club tickets to the Kroger Queen City LPGA Championship happening at TPC Riverbend from September 18-22, 2024. We will raffle off a Callaway golf tote - it’s cute and versatile! We will also have QCLL branded towels, golf balls, ball markers and tees for the winners of the 4 hole scramble.
It’s going to be a really fun event - can’t wait to catch up with Matt Starr and get back to the beautiful Meadow Links practice facility. This is a great event for those looking to improve their full swing skills, and also perfect for beginners. Will I see you there?
Have a great week!
