Who else has been waiting for fall golf?

The first official day of fall: September 22. Although I am not so happy about the daylight hours shrinking, I welcome the cooler temps, jewel colors and crispy leaves.

Here I have a few ideas for practical fall golf outfits, followed by a couple of fall golf fun facts below.

This week, we still are having 80+ degree days in the forecast here in Cincinnati, but I’m dusting off my fall pieces in preparation for the change in weather that’s inevitable. Just letting you know: These are clothes from my own closet and I’m not being paid by any of these brands. Giving some inspiration for your fall golf wardrobe!

Fall golf outfits

Had a little fun modeling clothes from my own closet. This top is a Calia’s paper-thin quarter zip from Dicks, and the bottom is Athleta Trekkie North Jogger. Both of these pieces are very thin, which is great for a cool (not cold) early evening 9 hole round.

This black & white gingham patterned top is by Cool Birdie. I picked this one up last year at the PGA Superstore during a trip to Florida. I could not find a link to anything similar, but I LOVE this top. The pants are Athleta Venice High Rise Jogger. They are a thicker weight so they are good for the much cooler evenings. The green color actually looks really nice out on the golf course but kinda blends in with the chair in this picture. I like these joggers specifically because they have deeper pockets that actually hold things in them, two back pockets with zippers plus there is a little zipper pocket inside the right front pocket.

This top is Lady Hagan, from Dicks. The bottoms are Puma Golf joggers, which I got on sale last season from Dick's as well. Find them at Dicks.com.

Sweatshirts? I say: Not during, but after! - I do not like the bulk of sweatshirts while I play golf. They restrict motion, in my opinion. So I am typically layering thinner pieces together or throwing on a thin puffer vest over my quarter zips if I need warmth during the round. Afterwards, when I stop moving, I get cold pretty much right away. I do stuff a sweatshirt inside my golf bag for after golf. Whether sitting out on the patio or going inside the clubhouse to get a bite to eat, I’m pulling out that sweatshirt because I need that warmth.

Check out Smoke Show Golf Co for the cutest sweatshirts. https://smokeshowgolf.com/collections/sweatshirts

Fall golf tidbits

  • Golf ball color: while normally I play with a bright pink golf ball, I always switch to white in September. The pink blends in too much with the leaves and it becomes nearly impossible for me to spot those pink balls. So, white is advised!

  • In colder temps, the golf ball does not travel as far. So don’t take it personally when your drives are below average: It’s just physics. You may consider clubbing up for certain shots.

  • The whole golf course will be firmer. The ball will bounce and roll more.

  • Golf courses might be taking measures to protect the grounds since grass grows slower and the course recovers slower from damage this time of year. You can expect to see signage directing you away from certain areas as they may be off-limits.

  • You may have heard about “the leaf rule” aka you get a free drop if you lose your ball in a pile of leaves. This is technically not an official USGA rule, but instead it’s a local rule courses can enact at this time of year. I’ll dig into this one in a future blog post!

  • This might be a good time of year to ditch the golf cart and walk the course. Either carry your bag or rent a push cart. You’ll enjoy the walk!

Let’s hope that the really cold weather holds off for a while so we can enjoy all that fall has to offer. What are your favorite fall golf looks? Comment below or shoot me a DM. Any other tips you can think of for fall golf?
