What’s in my golf bag

In some parts of the world, the golf season is just getting started while in others (like the midwest) the cold is upon us and outdoor golf is slowing down.

Whatever area of the world you are in, whether you are warming up for your season or getting ready to put the golf clubs away for a bit, now is a great time to take inventory of your golf bag. I’m laying out each compartment of the golf bag, and everything that I keep inside it to make sure I’m prepared for a successful round. After that, I have a list of some other helpful things you might want to consider packing along for your round.

Let’s start with my clubs

I play the Taylor Made Sim2 Max. I bought them in 2022 after getting myself fitted. I have a Driver, 3-wood, 5-wood, irons 5-9, pitching wedge, sand wedge & putter. So in all I have 11 clubs in my bag. My driver & putter ride at the top of the bag (when carrying it) together they share a slot. Then my irons are sorted by long, mid and short length. With the golf rules stating a max of 14 clubs, I have room to add 3 to my bag if I so desire (and I am thinking about getting some new wedges….)

I have 2 golf towels attached to the outside of the bag, and there is a velcro spot where I stick my golf glove to dry out between rounds.

Valuables pocket

In every golf bag, there is usually a little pocket that is lined with felt. This is for your “valuables”: things like keys, wallet, phone. What do I keep in there?

  • Hair ties

  • Ball markers

  • Extra pencils

  • A sharpie, for marking my balls

  • My divot repair tool

While cleaning it out I also found some coupons and business cards that made their way in the pocket throughout the season.

I have a small purse that I usually plop into the basket in the back of the golf cart, so I normally don’t bother transferring my wallet or keys into my golf bag unless I’m walking with a push cart.

Tee pocket

You guessed it: in here I have tees. I also have a portable speaker, which I don’t use often but I like to have it in the bag just in case.

In this compartment I found a sunblock stick from Aveeno that I use for my face.

Golf ball pocket

In the very front of the bag is typically a large zipper pocket for golf balls. I also stash my rangefinder in there, because it’s pretty roomy.

When I was first starting out playing golf, I always packed a lot of golf balls because I didn’t know what to expect week to week - and usually I lost a lot of balls. The secret to a happy golf round is a lot of cheap golf balls haha. After improving my game and consistency, I only pack 2 sleeves of balls in the golf bag - so a total of 6 balls in my bag at all times. The golf balls can make the golf bag really HEAVY when you have too many - so best not to overpack.

This is the rangefinder that I bought earlier this year.

Side pockets

My golf bag has two large zip pockets, one on either side, and an insulated pocket which a water bottle can slip into.

In the largest zip pocket, I have a spare sweatshirt made of technical material. I always keep this in my golf bag because in spring and fall, the cold can sometimes surprise me on the course. I hate being cold! This sweatshirt is great too because it’s a lighter material so it’s not bulky inside the bag - but still provides some warmth for me when I need it!

In the other zip pocket, a bit smaller, I have a visor and a hat which both have hat clips with ball markers on them. Yes, sometimes they get a little crushed by being in the bag - but I don’t normally wear hats so I found this is the best way to make sure I always have a hat or visor for golf.

I also keep a spare glove inside a plastic zipper bag. Why do I store the spare glove inside the plastic bag? So that it doesn’t get ruined by moisture before I even use it.

My sunscreen sits in the insulated pocket - and it is still roomy enough to fit my water bottle in there as well.

The golf duffel bag in my trunk

In my duffel bag in my trunk I have spare golf balls, and my golf cart seat covers (I have two). One is just like a regular Terry cloth towel material and the other is specifically for rainy weather - it has a waterproof side and a quilted side.
