Exploring a new (to me) local course

I’m not playing golf as often as you might think. Yes, I play 9 in my weekly ladies league. Outside of that, it’s always a treat to squeeze in another round of golf in my week. This weekend was pretty cool because I got to play 18 holes at a new (to me) local course.

From left to right: Laura, Mary, Susy, and Alana at hole #1 on the East course of Glenview.

Four of us got together to play Glenview Golf Course (Glendale, OH). This is one of the Cincinnati Recreation Commission golf courses. This course has 3 nines. We played the East/South combo.

Overall the golf course was in great shape. It was a very HOT round. While I am happy to have played golf, I unfortunately lacked the foresight of snagging a decent tee time earlier in the week. By the time I figured out I had time to play and had playing partners, the earliest time was 2:38PM so that’s what we did! We had lots of fluids and snacks along with us. I also used my cooling towel, which feels so nice in the hot weather.

I preferred the South nine to the East nine. Playing the East nine, we were were pretty exposed to the sun but the South course had more of a wooded, secluded feel to it. My favorite hole was #2 on the South course. It was a slightly down hill par 3 over water, which was 98 yards from the gold tees. It was surrounded with mature trees. I used my new rangefinder to get the distance to the pin and it was 110 yards. I nailed the shot off the tee with my 8-iron and landed pin-high, but on the right side of the green. Two putts and I was happy with a par there.

Me and my golf partner Char - theme this week was “favorite sports team” so we went Bengals orange & black

Speaking of par 3’s - I won closest to the pin on hole 15 this week on my ladies league at Hickory Woods. That is a first for me! I won longest putt once last season, and this is the first time ever winning closest to the pin. HOWEVER I have to say that a friend of mine Stacey hit this shot (pic below) on the same hole - but she wasn’t paid into our weekly closest to the pin game so she didn’t win. Kudos Stacey! You are dialed in, great shot! I won closest to the pin but I was nowhere near that close.

We played the back nine this week. The back nine is hilly but more shaded than the front. It is a little nicer to play in the heat on the back nine.

I was very pleased with my score of 51. I hit the green on two out of the three par 3’s. I had 3 holes where I 3-putted, so I will continue to work on putting. On hole 14, which is a 328 yard par 4, I was just a few yards shy of landing on the green in regulation (GIR is 2 shots on a par 4). On hole 16, which is 275 yard par 4, I landed left of the green. So I could have made GIR if I had a better aim on my second shot. Green in regulation on par 4’s are probably the most difficult thing for me - my average drive is 150 yards. So if from the tee to the green is around or just over 300 yards, I’m 9 times out of ten hitting 3 shots to get on the green. It’s easier for me to get on in regulation on a par 5.

My scorecard - I always keep my own and write down which clubs I used, how many putts, and whether my drive hit the fairway. GIR I’m almost always short so I don’t write that down usually.

This weekend I had dinner with a friend, and did some work to prepare for the upcoming events at Queen City Links Ladies… here’s a quick rundown:
