Holiday DIY: turn your scorecard into a keepsake

Are you like me, a little sentimental? I love traditions (can’t wait to hit up Aldi this week with a good friend for our annual trip for their Advent calendar release). I have been known to tear up in a joyful moment (hello, crossing the finish line at a race). And…

Holiday DIY golf scorecards

When I go on a special golf trip, I save the scorecards.

I might even save the pencil I used and the tees with the course logo.

Yes I probably took pictures, and yes I probably bought a shirt or hat or ball marker in the pro shop, but the scorecards themselves are somehow more precious than any of that.

Maybe it’s because the scorecard was with me through the whole round, and my writing transformed it from just any card to one that represents me and my time at that golf course.

Here’s a holiday DIY idea you can copy.

With a few craft store supplies, scissors and your scorecard, you can make your own keepsake ornament. Ornaments that represent memories are just the best kind of ornament, imo. I like the ritual of unpacking the ornaments each year and reminiscing about them with my family as we hang each on our tree.

Here’s what you need:

  • Your scorecard(s)

  • Glass ornaments

  • A bag of decorative accent sand

  • A paint Sharpie (silver, gold or whatever color suits you)

  • A pair of scissors

  • Optional: golf pencil or tees from the course

  • Optional: a sprig of pine from the fake floral department

How to do it:

  • Decide how you’ll want to display your scorecard inside the glass. Cut the scorecard accordingly - knowing that you’ll need to roll each piece to get it inside the glass.

    • Tip: I like to take each 9 holes and cut narrow strips and curl them. One strip is my score, another is the par line, and another might be just the numbers 1-9, 10-18, etc. I also like to take the logo of the course and cut that out so it’s displayed inside the glass.

  • Fill the glass with a little sand so it covers the bottom.

  • Curl the pieces of scorecard and carefully slot them inside the glass.

  • Add any other decorations that you might like:

    • Golf pencil

    • Tees

    • A sprig of pine

  • Lastly, write with the paint marker on the glass - in mine I put the location and the year. You can put the golf course name, the month & year, or maybe simply write “Girls Golf Trip 2024” etc.

*** If cutting up your scorecard gives you heartburn, you can keep this idea in mind for your next trip or special round and grab an extra blank scorecard to use for this project in the future.***

Say you took a golf trip with your girlfriends - you could print a small picture of your foursome and put it in there. Maybe make 4 ornaments all the same and gift them to your friends.

It’s a craft so just remember: there’s no wrong way to do it.

Get creative! Hopefully this gives you some inspiration for holiday golf gift idea - or an idea to create a holiday ornament that gives a nod to a special moment you had this year in your golf game.

Do you have any other creative ideas for how you’ve made something unique and memorable out of your saved scorecards? I’d love to hear it!
